Box Furnace for NdFeB: Sintering/Tempering Parameters & Performance Impact

As a high-performance rare earth permanent magnet material, neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets are widely used in new energy and intelligent manufacturing fields. Due to precise temperature control and flexible operation, box furnaces are key equipment for sintering and tempering small and medium-batch magnets. Their process parameters directly determine the final magnetic properties and structural stability of the magnets. Based on practical experience, this paper systematically analyzes the core sintering and tempering parameters of NdFeB magnets treated in box furnaces and their influence on magnet performance, providing a practical guide for production process optimization.X6PMuffle Furnace,Tube Furnace,Vacuum Furnace,Atmosphere Furnac

1. Sintering Process Parameters of Box Furnace and Their InfluenceX6PMuffle Furnace,Tube Furnace,Vacuum Furnace,Atmosphere Furnac
Sintering is the core step determining magnet density and magnetic properties, requiring strict control of heating rate, sintering temperature, holding time and cooling method.X6PMuffle Furnace,Tube Furnace,Vacuum Furnace,Atmosphere Furnac
Heating Rate: A segmented heating method is adopted. Heat slowly at ≤5℃/min in the low-temperature section (room temperature to 500℃) to fully remove the binder and moisture, preventing air holes inside the magnetic blank. Heat at 8-10℃/min in the medium-high temperature section (500℃ to sintering temperature) to balance efficiency and thermal uniformity, avoiding thermal stress cracking caused by excessive heating.

Sintering Temperature: A core control point. The typical range is 1050-1080℃. Too low temperature leads to insufficient magnetic powder diffusion, poor density, and a significant drop in magnetic properties (e.g., remanence). Too high temperature causes abnormal grain growth and grain boundary phase melting, resulting in a sharp reduction in coercivity. Verification shows that around 1060℃ achieves the best balance between density and magnetic properties.X6PMuffle Furnace,Tube Furnace,Vacuum Furnace,Atmosphere Furnac

Holding Time: Must match the temperature, generally 4-6 hours. Insufficient time results in inadequate internal diffusion; excessive time causes excessive grain growth and oxidation. It is recommended to hold for 4-5 hours at 1050-1060℃ based on magnet size to achieve the optimal balance between densification and grain size.X6PMuffle Furnace,Tube Furnace,Vacuum Furnace,Atmosphere Furnac
Cooling Method: Adopt rapid cooling (15-20℃/min) after sintering. Accelerate cooling by introducing inert gases such as argon or nitrogen, which effectively inhibits grain growth, reduces grain boundary oxidation, and significantly improves magnet coercivity. Remove the magnet from the furnace only after the temperature drops below 70℃ to avoid secondary cracking caused by excessive temperature difference.

2. Tempering Process Parameters of Box Furnace and Their InfluenceX6PMuffle Furnace,Tube Furnace,Vacuum Furnace,Atmosphere Furnac
Tempering is a necessary subsequent process to eliminate sintering residual stress, stabilize grain boundary structure, and improve coercivity. Multi-stage tempering is universally adopted for NdFeB magnets.X6PMuffle Furnace,Tube Furnace,Vacuum Furnace,Atmosphere Furnac

Multi-stage Tempering Strategy: The main stream is two-stage or three-stage tempering. Primary tempering (880-930℃, holding for 2-4 hours) is mainly used to eliminate sintering residual stress and promote the uniform distribution of grain boundary phases. The most significant coercivity improvement, up to over 15%, is achieved when the temperature is controlled at 900-940℃ during this stage.X6PMuffle Furnace,Tube Furnace,Vacuum Furnace,Atmosphere Furnac
Subsequent Tempering Parameters: Secondary tempering (400-520℃, holding for 3-5 hours) is used to further stabilize grain boundaries, reduce the movement resistance of magnetic domain walls, and improve performance stability. For products with high performance requirements, tertiary tempering (400-450℃, holding for 1-2 hours) can be added to optimize the microstructure and reduce performance attenuation.X6PMuffle Furnace,Tube Furnace,Vacuum Furnace,Atmosphere Furnac

Cooling and Aging: Cool slowly at 5-10℃/min after tempering to avoid new internal stress. After cooling to room temperature, perform surface cleaning to remove the oxide layer to ensure the consistency of the appearance and performance of the final product.

3. Comprehensive Suggestions for Process OptimizationX6PMuffle Furnace,Tube Furnace,Vacuum Furnace,Atmosphere Furnac
Sintering Optimization: Implement the "segmented heating + inert gas protection rapid cooling" process to effectively control magnet oxidation and grain growth.X6PMuffle Furnace,Tube Furnace,Vacuum Furnace,Atmosphere Furnac
Tempering Optimization: Prioritize the two-stage tempering process to achieve the best balance between performance and efficiency with the highest cost performance.X6PMuffle Furnace,Tube Furnace,Vacuum Furnace,Atmosphere Furnac
Atmosphere Control: Strictly control the furnace vacuum (≤0.5Pa) or introduce protective gas to prevent air from entering and ensure magnet quality.X6PMuffle Furnace,Tube Furnace,Vacuum Furnace,Atmosphere Furnac
