During the research on high-value utilization of biochar, the Xamk research team identified prominent drawbacks of conventional static tube furnaces when processing powdery biomass. Material accumulation leads to uneven heating, low heat transfer efficiency and local overheating, which severely compromise biochar quality stability and restrict process scaling research. Accordingly, the team sought dynamic heat treatment equipment capable of uniform heating for powder materials under controlled atmospheres, to build a critical experimental platform for innovative circular economy research.

"One of the core missions of our BioSampo Research Center is to utilize various biomass feedstocks to produce high-quality biochar via pyrolysis, and to subsequently apply this biochar in the development of high value-added products. When processing powdered biomass, traditional static tube furnaces often suffer from material accumulation, which leads to uneven heat transfer and severely compromises the consistency of the resulting biochar's quality. The rotating function of the PT-1200TX rotary tube furnace effectively resolves this issue; the rotation of the furnace tube causes the biomass particles to tumble continuously, ensuring that every single particle is heated uniformly—thereby significantly enhancing the quality stability of the biochar. The 30-segment programmable temperature control profile allows us to precisely regulate the heating rate and holding time during the pyrolysis process. Coupled with the precise regulation of the protective atmosphere via a dual-channel mass flow controller, we are able to systematically investigate how process parameters—such as temperature, residence time, and atmospheric composition—influence the biochar's yield and physicochemical properties. The equipment features an intuitive user interface with centralized touchscreen controls, enabling our researchers to master its operation very quickly. "In our research on sludge char activation and the application of biochar in construction materials, we impose extremely rigorous requirements on the control of activation temperature and atmosphere. The PT-1200TX rotary tube furnace’s adjustable tilt angle and rotation speed features enable us to precisely control the residence time of materials within the heating zone; furthermore, its dual-channel mass flow controllers facilitate the precise control of N₂ and CO₂ ratios—a capability that is critical for our physical activation studies. Since being put into operation over a year ago, the equipment has maintained exceptional stability, demonstrating high temperature control accuracy and an extremely low failure rate. This unit serves not only our own team but is also made available to other research groups at Xamk, resulting in a very high utilization rate.
